Kerrie's Missions #5

Fission Chips

The story so far...

The recent successful defection of 3 NK Generals (see #4 'Greener Grass') has resulted in a great deal of important intelligence, as they attempt to boost their importance and gain positions of strength with their new allies.

Although we are pleased with the information, there are doubts about some things they have told us. One of their 'revelations' is that the North has found a way to use a new nuclear process to increase the performance of the processors used in navigation equipment.

Some of this new equipment is claimed to be currently under test at an NK solar plant, with promising results. The processors are easily and quickly made at a nuclear plant further north, but the equipment being used to test them is very special, and cannot be replaced easily. Part of this test equipment is disguised as solar collectors at the plant near Hyon Ni, and the testing is to be done using captured vehicles - Jeeps, LAV's and Humvees.

If this is true, then it is imperative that we destroy this equipment before the testing process is complete. Without a good test result, the North will not be so eager to bring this new technology on-line as they, too, have doubts about it's usefulness. If the claims are true, then the new process could be used to improve the performance of many other electronic components, and many of their systems will have performance improvements that will put them in front of anything we currently produce.

However, if the current testing program is stopped by us, the North may not have the capacity to replace the test equipment and could redirect their efforts elsewhere, leaving us ahead in digital technology.

We need to find any evidence of the testing and stop it. The presence of captured vehicles would be a strong indication that our information is accurate.

Briefing

In transit Dongducheon/Ducheon - 16.30 hrs - Overcast

Your mission is to destroy the equipment, and the test vehicles (if they exist) at waypoint 4.

Your primary targets are the solar collectors at the northern end of the plant near the satellite dish, and the 2 large, low buildings at the northeast corner of the facility - use MK-82HD's on all these at low level. Secondary targets are the vehicles, if present. They should be close to the buildings, and can be taken out by strafing.

The plant is protected by SAM's and AAA - if the A-10's fail to take them all out, you may need to do so.

As the mission starts, you're in transit from Dongducheon to Ducheon, to prepare for the strike on the Solar Plant. Hornet 2 will be accompanying you for part of the way, but his mission is to provide air cover and he will remain airborne while you service your aircraft. Make sure you release him to resume his mission well before you arrive at Ducheon if you have ordered him to formate on you.

When you land at Ducheon, a flight of A-10's will take off and wait for you at waypoint 3. Service your aircraft, take off and meet them there. They will then commence a SEAD to your target, to clear the way for you.

There is likely to be a strong air defence as well, so 3 F-14D's will be launching from Enterprise shortly to provide cover. An F-16 will also be in the air sometime during your mission to fly SEAD on the border defences between Dongducheon and your target. He may also provide some air cover.

The enemy air threat could be strong. It is expected that aircraft will be launched from Ichon, Hyon Ni, and Maeng San on CAP, so be on the lookout for them as well - you may need to fight your way to the target, or provide air cover for the A-10's. However, only engage enemy interceptors if they are a direct threat to either the A-10's or yourself - don't waste time and fuel chasing them if they are already engaged.

This will be a shallow strike, and you will need to carry a full munitions load, so you shouldn't need any external fuel.

Destruction of at least part the facility, and at least half of any test vehicles present.
